Cloud 9 Brochure
A local food and beverages company needed to rebrand their chocolate milk product. They needed a delightful to introduce their three new mascots to their distributors. I designed this three-page pop-up brochure to feature the colorful mascots. I also added some interactivity on the last page to reveal some information beneath the mascot. The paper was made lightweight to make it economic to send by mail.

Tea Carousel
For my college course in Packaging Design, we were tasked to create a novel type of packaging for any existing product. I chose Basilur tea as my study, because I like tea and that brand does a lot of novelty packaging. I created a Tea Carousel Display for the product. It has four sides based on works of Impressionist artists and four corresponding made-up tea flavors. It folds into a book to make packing and shipping easier. But when it’s tea time, you can open it up 360 degrees and let your guests choose their tea.

Popfolio
Part of the culmination of my college degree required us to create a portfolio of all our student works. I took up Industrial Design in college, and the norm back then was to have a magazine-type catalog of best works. I, on the other hand, have a penchant for doing things a little differently. My school’s motto is “Do ordinary things in an extraordinary way,” and I wholly agree with it. As many of my student works were products that demonstrated some kind of functionality, I wanted to include this aspect in my portfolio. I wanted viewers not just to look at pictures of my works, but to be able to experience how they work. After all, that’s kind of the point of good design. A pop-up book was the perfect medium to deliver this tangible experience. With paper, I recreated clocks that move, a chair that rocks, a phone app you could “scroll” though, bags you open, and many more.

A Pop-Up Proposal
My client Daniel had a pop-up book-loving girlfriend he wanted to spend his life with. And so, he thought of asking for her hand by telling their love story in a custom-made pop-up book. The story begins with how they met and tells of how she changed his life, with each page representing a milestone in their relationship. Daniel himself wrote the manuscript and story. I worked with talented illustrator Shaira Tagle to mimic the style of Bitmoji – an app they bonded over during their relationship. Shaira recreated the style for the backgrounds I created in paper. The book was laser printed on heavy cardstock and I assembled it by hand. I added a piece of iridescent foil to the diamond ring on the last page for that finishing touch. When Daniel “popped” the question, he got a big “Yes!”

The Little Prince Takes Flight
This artwork was commissioned from me by a client who loves the Little Prince. She wanted something unique that couldn’t be bought anywhere else. I created a plethora of pop-up structures to feature the different characters that appear in the book, while carefully reproducing the illustrations as per her request. The main structure in the middle shows the Little Prince taken in flight by a flock of birds. His asteroid B-612 and beloved Rose unfolds below him. And using various paper engineering techniques to create action, the other characters surround him in the sky.

Multo-Multuhan: A Halloween Children’s Book
I created this Halloween-themed pop-up book for my guest appearance on the local children’s edutainment program IBilib. It uses simple pop-up techniques that I demonstrated during the episode. I also wrote the original Filipino poem that accompanies the artworks. The poem tells the story of a Vampire, a Zombie, and a Werewolf, who live on the edge of a town. The townsfolk make rumors about them and their monstrous ways, but they become the most popular residents every Halloween, when they give generous amounts of candy to trick-or-treaters. The three monsters are slight caricatures of the show’s three hosts.

Carousel & Ferris Wheel
These cards are a study in using all-white. Oftentimes, adding illustrations completes a pop-up sculpture, but restricting myself to using white shows that this is not always the case. I hand cut the details on these pieces to give the otherwise plain papers some interesting features. The Ferris wheel even spins, despite it being very delicate. I love the nostalgia the comes with carnivals, and I find that carousels and Ferris wheels are a recurrent subject in my works.

The First Day of Our Forever
Surrounded by trees in fall colors, a young couple got engaged at the scenic Nami Island in Korea. But they had no good pictures of the moment. The soon-to-be-bride wanted to surprise her fiancé with a card to commemorate that special memory. With her help in describing the moment, I recreated the scene in a pop-up card. The artwork depicts the couple seconds before my client opened the box where the ring was hidden, capturing the sense of anticipation they had. The whole structure is cut from a single piece of paper. The trees delicately pop from the background, giving a sense of depth to the scene. The digital watercolor papercut illustrations bring out the autumn vibrance of their cherished memory.
